Accessibility at Davids Organic Farm

Gwarmacwydd is a working farm, and our cottages were made from stone farm buildings over 200 years old: a coach house, a mill, a cattle byre, a stable and the old servants’ quarters. Their character comes with stairs, steps and uneven ground. We would rather tell you plainly here than have you find out when you arrive.

None of the cottages has been adapted for wheelchair users, and every cottage needs guests who can manage stairs. In most of the cottages the bedrooms are upstairs. The exceptions are the bunk room on the ground floor of The Old Barn, which has its bathroom upstairs, and the bedroom floor of The Old Mill, which has its own door up a gradual slope and one step, though its wet room and toilet are on the floor below. The Gallery, our shared room for groups, has a ramped entrance.

This page describes each building so that you can judge for yourself. If anything leaves you unsure, please ring us on 01437 208800 before you book. We live on the farm, we know every step, and we will give you a straight answer.

Before you arrive

Every booking is checked in online before arrival, and the check-in is the place to tell us about any access need, as well as to ask for a cot, a high chair or anything else. Help is free; provisions are charged. Anything that needs arranging is best done by phone. Please ask us, your on-site hosts and owners, or any of our staff.

Getting here and parking

Gwarmacwydd is near Llanfallteg, on the Pembrokeshire-Carmarthenshire border, reached by a private lane. Satnav postcodes take you past the entrance, so please follow the directions on our Location page, or use Google Maps or what3words: forklift.sending.races.

The nearest railway station is Whitland. If you plan to come on by taxi, please check with the taxi company that they will drive down our lane. The lane is tarmac and fine for an ordinary car, with some stretches we have repaired with gravel, but not every driver is willing to come down it.

You can drive up close to your cottage to unload, a few steps from the door, and then park in the cottage’s own parking space a few yards away. The Old Coach House has only a very low step at its door, and every other cottage has one step up. The Old Mill has two doors, described below.

There are no lights on the lane or in the grounds at night: we keep the sky dark. Please bring a torch.

Around the cottages

The five cottages sit together like a small village in the grounds of Gwarmacwydd House. Every cottage door opens onto the shared gardens and lawns, over 5 acres of them. The paths around the cottages are gravel; beyond them the ground is grass and farm track. All of it is uneven, and slippery after rain.

For a family or group that includes someone who needs help, The Old Barn and The Tower connect through a communicating door, as do The Butlers and The Old Coach House, and we can set them up together.

The Old Coach House

You come in through French doors over a very low step. The ground floor is open-plan and tiled in travertine: sitting room, kitchen and dining area, and the bathroom, which has a large bath and a separate shower. The bathroom is on the ground floor but has not been adapted for wheelchair use. Both bedrooms are upstairs, up a standard domestic staircase with handrails, off a gallery that overlooks the living space.

The Butlers

One family bedroom with a king-size bed and a single, and a separate bathroom with a bath and no shower. The cottage is on two floors: the sitting and dining room and the kitchen downstairs, the bedroom and bathroom upstairs. There is no toilet on the ground floor. The back door opens straight onto the main garden.

The Old Mill

The Mill is on three floors, joined by a semi-circular stone staircase in the tower, and has two outside doors. The door to the middle floor, where the three bedrooms are, is up a gradual slope and one step. The lower floor holds the kitchen and dining room and a wet room with a walk-in shower, a wash basin and a toilet; its door, the one most guests use, is reached by going down outside steps with a balustrade and a sloping ramp. The sitting room is on the top floor.

The Old Barn

The sitting and dining room and the kitchen are on the ground floor, with a bunk room of 2ft 6in bunk beds, really only suitable for young people or those young at heart. The master bedroom, with its own shower and wash basin, the twin bedroom and the bathroom, with bath, basin and toilet, are upstairs. There is no toilet on the ground floor.

The Tower

The sitting room, kitchen and dining area are on the ground floor. A semi-circular stone staircase in the tower, with room at its foot for a sofa bed, leads up to the bedroom and its en-suite shower room. There is no toilet on the ground floor.

The Gallery

The Gallery, for guests staying in three or more cottages, has a ramped entrance and is accessible to wheelchair users. Its children’s mezzanine is up a space-saving staircase. The Gallery has no toilet or kitchen; guests use those in their cottages.

On the farm

The Guests’ 8:30 Morning Round starts in the lean-to by the farmhouse back door and goes on foot over farm ground, past the pond to the goats, the hens and the old lambing shed. Angela’s buggy, with a bench seat, carries a parent and child or two older children at walking pace, in turns. It can also take an adult who finds walking difficult, as long as they can get in and out and walk a few steps; it is quite small.

The walks along the River Tâf, through the woodland and along the old railway line follow farm tracks and paths. They are unsurfaced, uneven and muddy in wet weather, with stiles or gates on some.

The tractor driving experience and the tractor rides both start with a climb up into a tractor cab, which even fit guests find awkward. If you are unsure whether you can manage it, please ask us before you book.

Assistance dogs

Assistance dogs, trained to carry out specific tasks for a disabled person, are welcome in all our cottages free of charge. Please tell us when you book, and we may ask to see the dog’s identification. Emotional support, therapy and comfort dogs are welcome as pet dogs, on the same terms as any other dog.

Telling us what you need

Ring 01437 208800, or the farmhouse on 01437 563839 out of hours. If we can make a stay work for you, we will; if we cannot, we will say so before you book, not after.

This website

We want everyone to be able to use this website. The pages are marked as British English for screen readers, every page has a link to skip straight to the content, and the text can be enlarged with your browser’s zoom.

Some things still fall short. Many of our photographs do not yet have written descriptions, which we are adding, and some pages have their headings out of order. The booking calendar and the map on the Location page come from other companies, SuperControl and Google, so we cannot change how they work.

If any part of the site is hard for you to use, or you would like this information in another form, please ring 01437 208800 or email info@davidsorganicfarm.wales and we will help.
